4WD TIPS - RIVER CROSSING

Davey Hughes loves his D-Max, he’s had his fair share of back-country adventures so tune in for some handy 4WD tips, powered by his Isuzu D-Max! First up, navigating a river crossing.

Now often when you're off the beaten track you'll need to cross the odd river, River crossings can easily catch you out though so like other hazards, you should get out of the truck and walk them first. Like a wise man once said: if you can’t walk it, don’t drive it!

Start by locating a good entry and a good exit to the river, somewhere that doesn't have too many obstacles or potential hazards. After that, start your walk to choose your line across, and while you’re doing so, keep looking for hazards in your path: big boulders, deep patches, rapids and so on. A good pair of polarised sunglasses are a must, so you don't miss those hard to see hazards through the glare.

If you're looking at getting out and about in the back country like Davey Hughes, make sure your D-Max or MU-X are well kitted out with all the Genuine Isuzu Accessories you need to make your adventure a good one.

As you get towards the other side of the river, turn your attention to the exit: is it sandy? Are there boulders in your way? Your Isuzu D-Max will probably handle it but you should always be trying to avoid any unnecessary risks. Now to get going, stick her into 4WD low and second gear (that way you won’t have to change gear midway), Identify your line from before, give it some power and keep your momentum through the water.

Try crossing on a slight downhill angle, this helps you find the current and puts less pressure on the vehicle. As you exit the river, you’ll probably have to deal with large boulders and loose stones. Remember, take it nice and easy, there's nothing worse than getting stuck on the last hurdle. That’s another river safely crossed! Once you're all clear, check your vehicle, plot your route and continue on your adventure.
